A Pinch of Salt

A few years ago I was baking cookies with a friend and as I was rattling off the ingredients from memory they stopped me as I said "1 teaspoon of Salt."

"Salt?" They asked. "But we are making chocolate chip cookies, Why do we need salt?"

Part of me just wanted to give the mom answer of, "because I said so, just do it," but I realized in the moment how much more significant this really was.

One of my favorite scriptures for a while now has been 2 Nephi 2:11 "For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so...righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility."

If you look at the big picture of that chocolate chip cookie, you have over 2 cups of flour, 2 eggs, 1 cup of butter, and the list goes on so why does ONE little teaspoon of salt matter?! Especially when the flavor completely contradicts that of the sweet chocolate in the cookie?

Opposition.

If you look at life, most of the time will not be sad times filled with salt. Most days will be joyous and exciting! Chocolatey days where the flour and eggs mix perfectly with the butter and sugar to build your perfect life cookie!

BUT without that little bit off sadness, that little bit of salt, that joy, that chocolate could be overbearing. You would have so much joy you wouldn't even know what joy was! You would have so much chocolate you wouldn't know whether you were eating a cookie, or a chocolate bar!

Now we aren't promised the salty times are going to be easy and taste good. You wouldn't ever take a handful of salt and just eat it all at once, would you? BUT when combined in the perfect life cookie made just for you by the PERFECT baker you get the perfect amount of salt with the chocolate and all those other ingredients that make your cookie exactly what it needs to be,

And if life is a little salty now, hang on. Your baker is probably getting ready to add a few more ingredients. But you have to remember that every cookie has a perfect order in which it is built, and so do you. We may not know how we are being built or what that perfect order is, but He does. He is fine tuning you to be the best doggone tasting cookie you will ever be!

So when life gets hard, grab a cookie, and remember that perfection takes time... and a pinch of salt!
