Don't Judge Me Because I Serve Differently Than You

If you've read my earlier posts you know for years I've prayed about serving a mission. If one was right for me, if I should go, when I should go, can I even do such a thing. Eventually the answer was yes, but in a different way.

I am a Young Church Service Missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. No, I don't knock on doors. No, you won't see me walking the streets or riding bikes. No, I don't leave my home for 18 months-2 years to teach the children of God. But I AM a missionary.

This last Sunday I was set apart as a missionary for the church. I get to serve the Lord just as those who knock on doors & ride bikes get to. I just get to do it in my own way.

You see, I have a medical condition. For those who know me, they know that I have been diagnosed with seizures. Though they are mainly under control, it was such a recent diagnosis that my doctor is still watching me very closely. I go in for blood work about every 6 months & I see my doctor VERY regularly. Almost TOO regularly in my opinion. But illnesses happen & that's a way of life. I was given this trial & I must take it & grow from it. So I do.

Because of this I am not able to leave my house & teach for 18 months. I cannot leave the watchful eyes of my doctor for 18 months while I do the Lord's work, as much as I want to. And because of this the Lord has provided me with a way to still serve Him & to still help His children in a way that's fulfilling to me, to his children, & to Him.

This program is the Young Church Service Missionary Program. Through this I am able to serve my own mission while staying at home. I am able to work & even continue my education while under the care of my doctors & family, YET I can serve my full time mission.

Through this program I am able to work at the Family History Center & Index or work on my own family tree. I am able to attend institute & invite others to attend with me. I am able to volunteer at Interfaith & see the good they do there. I also get to work in the temple for my mission & though I haven't gone through the temple yet in order to start this assignment, I am in the process of preparing to do so & it is a beautiful thing. Plus there are so many other things available to those YCSMs here in the San Diego area to help them serve in their own capacities.

"... when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God." Mosiah 2:17

This includes teaching & serving. The Lord sees these types of service equally & He will not discriminate against one or the other.

I am extremely grateful for this opportunity I have to serve through this mission. Without it I don't know if I would ever have the opportunity to serve a mission. The Lord calls us all to the work, it's just different for us all. We are all unique individuals with different struggles, & the Lord has provided us with different & unique ways in which we can serve. I'm so thankful I was able to find mine.

  1. Will you be doing splits with the Sister Missionaries in your area as well?

    1. I do when asked but it is not part of my calling as a missionary so when I do, I do not have to wear my badge.
